Plug in portable baseboard heaters exist but the best baseboards are hardwired into the circuity of a home with 120 volt or 240 volt supplies either of which calls for the installation services. Since baseboard heaters have a built in junction box you won t have to cut in a junction box to feed it. Here is how to hook up a 240 volt one. Remove the knockout on the back of the heater s connector box and install a 1 2 inch cable clamp to the box.

The wiring should be installed into the baseboard heater using a protective bushing or cable connector. Installing the breaker and making the final connections at the service panel should be done by a licensed electrician. The basic steps of installing a baseboard heater unit are relatively standard. Simply run a 12 2 non metallic sheathed cable from the electrical service panel to the location of the baseboard heater.

Place the heater such that the screw holes lie in the same plane as the wall studs. The holes should be arranged in a line directly with the wall studs and the baseboard heater should be mounted into position such that every foot of the heater s body is supported by one screw. A typical circuit is installed to the location where the baseboard heater will be installed. Baseboard heaters are typically designed for either 120v or 208 240v applications.
